Thanks you two--you've profoundly changed my life in the past 6 months.  Work is easier, friends say that I'm less stressed, more affable--my health has changed.  I went for a complete physical recently, and all leading indicators dropped significantly--cholesterol, HDL/LDL ratio resting heart rate, etc. --so much so, that my life insurance premium dropped significantly.

Just a brief report on the marathon: I actually enjoyed it! That, despite the fact that the weather was nasty. When I saw that change in the forecast on Friday my spirits sank, but I had gone this far and there was no turning back. The way out was to the north along the Susquehanna River and the head wind was incredible.  I kept telling myself that it would be so much better with the wind at my back on the return. Didn't quite happen that way. Most of my self-doubt was during that first half of the race. I was pretty much on pace, but there were so many people passing me I began to wonder if I was doing something wrong. At mile 14 I thought, "I can do this", and from there it was all downhill, even though physically the hills were yet to come. By about mile 18, I started reeling in all those people who had passed me earlier. I was constantly passing until the finish, and I don't think anybody passed me from that point on. That felt great. I think I also had negative splits for the last half of the race, so I was glad I resisted the temptation to try to keep up with the passing crowd in the first part of the race. I felt really strong at the end. Of course I was, and am, sore, but I was somewhat surprised I didn't leave one of my limbs on the course.

So, I tell you all this because I really think the crossfit training was a real asset to the quality and time of the race. I know that all workouts are not specific to running muscles, but I believe even those muscles not directly involved in running do their part to make it easier on those that do the work. The core muscle training definitely helps with posture and preventiing fatigue and all the problems associated with that.  My sorest parts are 1) my feet, of course and 2) my upper thighs and groin, so I guess I need to work on these areas. My calves, lower quads, glutes, hamstrings and all other leg muscles were fine, as well as my knees - that was the biggest surprise of all. If there is one thing I have had problems with in the past, it's my knees, but they didn't hurt at all. I was amazed at that even though today they hurt some, but they did not hurt at all while I was running. So, just another testimony in praise of crossfit. Thanks a million for all your help, and patience. I'll see you soon.

Travel and work have kept me away as of late, however my short run on the trails in Wissahickon this morning confirmed that even the handful of workouts had helped as I was much stronger running up a couple of key hills that usually have my legs and lungs burning.  As my running has also suffered these past couple of weeks, I can only point to our intense workouts making my hill climbing feel easier.  Can't confirm that I'm faster, but was definately more comfortable.
